Emmy Award Winning reporter Channel 4 News

Waad Al-Kateab is a Syrian journalist and filmmaker who works for Channel 4 News in the UK. Her recently released film “For Sama” has just won The Documentary Feature- Grand Jury Award at SXSW.

During the siege of Aleppo Waad captured some of the most memorable images of the conflict – and her short news films won 24 awards – including the 2016 International Emmy for breaking news coverage. She was the first woman to win ‘Camera Operator of the Year’ at the Royal Television Society awards in the UK as well as picking up awards from the British Journalism Awards, Amnesty International, Rory Peck, Thomson Foundation, One World Media and the Foreign Press Association.  Her digital shorts went viral on C4 News’ digital platform and was seen by over 400 million around the world.   She was a student at the University of Aleppo when the protests against President Assad started in 2011 – she picked up a camera, taught herself to shoot and started documenting the horrors of the war.
