During the training, we will go through the step-by-step process of creating shortform vertical news videos with just a mobile phone, best practices and tools, from pre-production to post-production.

When shooting documentaries, what’s the best thing about a phone? There’s no doubting its capabilities as a powerhouse movie studio with incredible lenses on tap, instant playback and the capacity to edit as quickly as I can think. But its often overlooked superpower is, it’s a phone.

Like an undercover reporter it has a disarming quality, almost invisible, never getting in the way of frank and honest conversation. At MoJoFest I’m going to share my decade of making small, award winning documentaries… my techniques, experiences (good and bad) and why I’ll never invest in traditional camera.

While social media has made it easy for anyone to build a following and online community, ultimately these platforms own your content and your audience. This forces you to chase algorithms, upload daily/weekly content just to be seen in the feed, only to get vanity metrics (i.e. # likes, # views, etc.). We have to use social media to reach audiences where they are, but it's time to take control of your content, to amplify reach and foster engagement without minimizing the value you have to offer. In 2025 and beyond it's more important than ever to develop a direct relationship with your audience and invest in methods to gate select content rather than give it all away for free. This workshop explores strategies to do just that!

Prior to a photo walk, Brendan will heighten your visual awareness for detail and storytelling opportunities in short and effective exercises. Then we will hit the springtime streets of Dublin and put into practice what we have been learning.
Dublin is a lively and friendly city and the opportunities to create stories in images will be plenty. We will set out with objectives of what we want to create and Brendan will give one-to-one guidance to all participants on the walk.
Later we will return to the venue and work together as we learn to sequence and edit images into a cohesive narrative of our experiences of Dublin, its people and environment.
